Spring 2014 trends

Winter is almost over and Spring is just right around the corner. There’s nothing I love more than preparing for toastier climates and cleaning out my closet in preparation. Spring cleaning really does help the mind feel fresh and anew — and gives you the enthusiasm to try out new trends and styles! The best way to start is an obvious one — put away those heavy coats, thick sweaters and knits and exchange them for some lighter options. I’ve gathered up some of the hottest Spring 2014 trends and provided some ideas on how to incorporate them into your closet —

PASTELS –

Calvin Klein Collection - Front Row - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2014One of the biggest trends for SS14 is pastels, especially in pink and purple hues. Street style stars have been spotted on the streets of NY and London in bubblegum pink coats! Burberry was big on this trend with their ethereal light hued coats and so many other brands followed suit. One of the best ways to wear pastels would be to opt for a statement piece since the color is so gentle. An oversized cocoon coat or a garden dress would do. Sometimes pastels can wash you out so it’s best to wear them with some other colours with more depth and layer on some accessories!

FLORAL & TRIBAL PRINT

Another trend is florals and tribal prints. Florals are always big for Spring, much like pastels are, but you can opt to try floral in more ways than just the typical dress. Try incorporating a floral printed blazer with your skinny jeans or even some tapered floral trousers. These looks can be so visually striking! Tribal print works very well in a short, dresses and accessories, and it’s going to be a huge trend for SS14!

WHITES AND MONOCHROME

Whites were also present in many SS14 collections. The crisp and clean, yet structured vibe that white gives is always evident of spring time. A great way to wear white is in a monochromic way. Pairing your white blazer or trousers with black and grey pieces to break it up a bit always works. You will achieve a really put together look that is super chic.

CROPPED TOPS

There were also a lot of cropped tops with high necks and long sleeves on the catwalks. They reminded me a lot of the 90’s, but in a more modern way. These work perfectly with higher waist denim shorts and jeans — with a spring vibe but since it’s not summer yet, the longer sleeves and higher neck give you that added warmth.

ACCESSORIES

Finally we move onto accessories! Backpacks and sandals were huge for SS14! Gone are the days where you carry around a large tote. Everyone is swapping them out for a casual backpack which you can find in almost every high street store as well as in designer shops. These work perfectly for daytime wear, especially if you are headed to the park or beach! The same goes for sandals, a lot of designers favoured flats over wedges this time around and did their own take on the birkenstock sandal! That’s great news for our poor feet!
