Is God’s voice needed in online conversations?

on the phone

I’ve had three blogs ever ….. and am happy to say that I’ve come gapingly far from the first time I hit the publish button. Somehow when something evolves (Anything at all); we learn to get truer to ourselves and the voices of doubt that once camped in our minds – hush a bit. I used to blog about fashion alone, which was a blast. It was all about the impact I convinced myself I was making in the industry; PShh Please! Then, my life became ignited with a new passion that trumped the one I had for fashion and style. I knew the blog needed a re-direction.

Who blogs about faith and fashion anyways, I’d ask myself? Surely the fashion peeps are going to quit reading because they don’t agree with the fresh re-brand. Hypothetical thoughts drove me insane, and attimes still do. But if I was going to be honest with myself and embark on a true re-brand, I knew online conversations and collaborations needed a lot more Jesus. I could be one of those voices trying to make an echo in the vast confusion that is online. I’d decided to go all Matthew 5:14-16 on my readers who were slowly committing to coming back.

I was inspired to write this post after reading Toni Birdsong’s article talking about how “the enemy sets out each day to silence God’s message of hope and genuine relationship with his children” – especially online. She mentions how God’s voice, through me (us), is desperately needed online. I completely agree and here are the 6 reasons I’d give as to why:

  1. Everyone is trying to figure it out and find purpose – We’re all searching and striving for purpose, respect, and honour. Let’s be honest. When you choose to lead with a tone of love and hope on the internet; you’re fulfilling your God given purpose. Maybe you’re a Christian, but God isn’t a part of your personal brand online (That’s OK), but if the reason being is because you don’t want to lose the people’s choice award for popularity, then you may want to talk to God about it. Even finding the littlest way of commenting on, re-tweeting, or even liking Christian content can help to propel God’s voice online.
  1. Online perceptions will sting if you don’t know the truth – When you know the truth of God, you also know not to believe everything you see online. You’ll come to understand things like how someone else’s beauty, popularity, or blessings don’t disqualify your own. You can then support and encourage others who you perceive as doing better than you because you believe and know that God said you are great as well. I know this is easier said than done, especially when you are waiting for life’ BIG BREAK. At least you’re challenged to do better when faced with the unattainable expectations that perceptions breed.
  1. There is a lot of information online, about the best way to deal with relationships, love, money etc, when pursuing happiness (Ephesians 4:25) Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

The truth needs to go out! People need to be exposed to the sea of lies that makes up the pattern of this world. It isn’t ok to love God and to sin, and I really wish this lie would die. It’s the #1 lie destroying young Christians. In the world of you can’t have your cake and eat it too, I’d also like to add to that by saying you can’t have your God and sin too. Happiness is to know the saviour, because our human selves can never arrive at satisfaction alone. #TRUE

  1. Talking about God online takes the focus off of ourselves and is really a true service to others – [NEWS FLASH] …. We aren’t as important as we think we are, and when you try to encourage people in the Lord, our flaws becomes even more apparent. When I decide to sit down and blog about my spiritual convictions in a way that is counter-cultural to the majority of stuff written online, I can tell you that I’m definitely not thinking about me. I don’t know any other way to get my voice heard. So this is it, my ministry in the body of Christ until I’m given something else.
  1. It convicts you and keeps you accountable – If your church youth group is the only place that you can be identified as a Christian, it may be harder to feel the sense of obligation that comes with Christianity. The Bible warns us to beware of false prophets who come to us in sheep’s clothing, but inside are like ravenous wolves (Read the verse here). When you go online with your faith, you essentially become a message of love and peace. People will begin to take notice of the way you conduct yourself. This can either increase or decrease the impact of your Facebook status updates, tweets or even blog posts. Going online with Jesus isn’t a call to perfection, but a call to virtuous dealings. When no one knows you are a Christian, It may be easier to speak/act distastefully without a care.
  1. You send vibes of love and hope that anyone can receive – You become a pillar of hope for others when you speak boldly about the things you believe in. Not everyone may agree, but that was never the calling. If you aren’t different, you’ll never be able to inspire or encourage anyone. People will gravitate to your light and God will turn up the brightness for his benefit.

As a young Christian, I try my best to let it be know that I am a follower of Christ. This can be difficult in a world full of people whose beliefs go against the teachings of the Bible.
