How to style a picnic photoshoot – This is what you’ll need

Picnic photoshoot

Back again with another one.

So about a year ago I was planning a wedding — head high in tasks and expectations. About 6 months before the wedding my now husband and I planned a picnic themed photoshoot for our engagement photos and the results blew me out of the water. A year later I’m still absolutely smitten by the results.

While on the search for the perfect foods and lunch-ware for the shoot, I did a couple of searches for inspiration that came up rather dry. So I thought I’d give Google a gift in the form of this post for anyone who might want to recreate something similar for any occasion. Lets jump right in.

YOU WILL NEED –

FOOD/DESSERTS:  For your picnic feel free to include any food you like, but my suggestion would be to keep a consistent theme. In this photoshoot, I did deserts. So hence the velvety red cake (My husband and I talk about it to this day lol) – and the colourful array of French Macarons (Shhh …. They are from METRO). If you want to do fruit, make that the theme – Or if you want to grub and have a more laid back pizza party – throw open a can of soda and do it big.

BASKET:  Whats a picnic without a picnic basket? But it doesn’t have to be cookie cutter guys. In this picture I used a drink chiller to serve as the basket. Flip it upside down and you have a platform to place some of your food or props, which we’ll get to next.

PROPS:  According to the theme you choose, carefully select props that coordinate. In my case, I drew inspiration from the room we were shooting in. I added vintage pieces like the retro camera and tea set to compliment the aging room with crown moulding and mature wallpaper. Adding cards or stationary and floral that are significant to the reason for the shoot, can be added to any set.

COUCH THROW: This is your picnic blanket, at least in this case. The reason why I suggest a throw over a full blown blanket it because throws are easier to fold and transport AND are the perfect size for a picnic for two. I suggest a neutral colour, but if a bold pop of colour is justifiable – GO FOR IT!

My last tip off the record would be for you to finish all the food you brought. Don’t be wasteful now!

Cheers from me and the hubby stuffing our faces!
